John Rider
John Rider was Alex Rider's father. At Cambridge University, he studied politics and economics, and was an excellent tennis player. He later joined the Parachute Regiment at Aldershot and served for three years, seeing action in Northern Ireland and Gambia. John was awarded the Military Cross from the queen, as well as being promoted to the rank of Captain for carrying a wounded soldier to safety under fire during the attack on Goose Green, in the Falklands War. He worked for MI6 and was one of the best agents in the service. He was placed undercover in the organization SCORPIA, where he used the alias "Hunter". He achieved this by pretending to kill a taxi driver, which landed him in prison, aside from being discharged from the Army. During his time at Scorpia, he was a mentor to Yassen Gregorovich. It was mentioned that he saved Yassen's life while on a assignment with him in the Amazon, shooting a black widow spider off of Yassen's neck and assassinate the target with the same bullet.

Julia Rothman, a senior executive of SCORPIA, started to fall in love with him, so he was "captured" during an assassination in Malta. Afterward, he faked his own death to leave SCORPIA on Albert Bridge while exchanging an eighteen-year-old (later revealed as George Adair, the son of the permanent secretary of the cabinet office) for John. Halfway across, he warned George about the plan, and moments later he was "shot" in the back(he used a firecracker and a bottle of blood on his back, activating it when the sniper with blanks "fired" at him). His best friend Ash, who had been working for SCORPIA, killed both him and his wife, Helen, by planting a bomb on their plane.
